What is HIV? What is AIDS?

HIV is short for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) which compromises the immune system’s ability to fight off infections. Without proper treatment, common illnesses such as influenza (the flu), the common cold, and other infections can cause major complications for people with AIDS.
