What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus called “SARS-CoV-2”. The main method of transmission for the disease is via the respiratory route when people inhale droplets and particles that infected individuals disperse when they breathe, talk, cough, sneeze, or sing. Common symptoms of the infection include headache, loss of smell, loss of taste, difficulty breathing, nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, muscle pain, sore throat, diarrhea, and fever. Those most at risk for developing serious complications include the elderly, those with underlying health conditions, and people with compromised immune systems, such as those living with HIV.
